Parental Bragging Writes
57Firsts for our daughter
Earlier in this year, later in the school year. Our oldest daughter won a placement in a play writing workshop. This workshop was in a much larger city at a great distance from our home.
Our daughter presented this opportunity to us with great enthusiasm and anticipation. You see this would be her first trip away from home without us, her first time in a large city, her first time having to take care of herself and staying in a hotel room of her own.
With all of these firsts that both she and us were looking at, it made it hard for us to say yes.

The first for us
The big first for us was now on our plate. We've never thought about sending our fourteen year old daughter away on her own. But here it was in front of us.
We did alot of talking with the organizers to learn about the environment that she would be in. Not to mention how and when would she travel between the Vancouver Playhouse and her hotel room, or where and when would she eat.

We comunicated for over a week via email and telephone to get all of the details worked out.
One of the things we later found out about our little playwrites trip to Vancouver, BC Canada, was that this whole experience was for students sixteen years of age or older. One of those things that get overlooked when dealing with such an opportunity for the first time.

Now of course we were very proud, that out of thousands of applicants to attend this workshop, our daughter was chosen. Not only that but, out of the twelve available spots, the organizers chose to go with only eight playwrites. This of course got phoning everyone we know and plastering her acceptance all over facebook.
We were even more excited when we found out that at this workshop the playwrights would be working with proffessional writers, directors and actors / actresses. The reason for this was due to the overall experience being completed with a live performance of the short plays that the writers were writing during this ten day event.
As mentioned earlier the age requirement that wasn't shared with us was sixteen and our daughter was only fourteen at the time. The organizers did find this out while she attended the daily classes. With this knowledge they had expressed their amazement at which level of complexity our daughter was writing at.
